You’ve got to get up every morning with determination if you’re going to go to bed with satisfaction.George Lorimer
In the old days, most of us were satisfied to have a job that simply paid the bills. But now, we crave so much more in our work. We want contentment, challenge, growth, joy and a sense that make us feel alive and passionate about our job. In other words, we seek the purpose or meaning of our jobs.
Perfect jobs that provide meaning and satisfaction 24/7 might be an illusion. Even dream jobs can become tedious, stressful or lack meaning after a certain period.
So how can you find meaning in your job and work happily consistently? Here are some tips to try:
1. Don’t Take Your Work for Granted
As Frank Sonnenberg said, “Appreciate what you have, while you have it, or you’ll learn what it meant to you after you lose it.”
With a world population that’s growing at an alarming rate and amidst this Covid situation, anyone who does have a job really should be grateful for their employment, because many people are struggling to have a paid work, but can’t find any. So, be grateful for your job.

2. Why You Work?
There has to be a reason for doing work otherwise you’ll never get out of bed in the morning. Certainly, money is a valid point, but there should be other reasons that keep you accelerating.
One of the best ways to seek a higher perspective of your work is to use the technique of creative questioning to become aware of the influence your work has on the world around you. Ask yourself questions like-
- Who ultimately benefits from the products and services your company offers?
- What difference do your daily efforts make?
- Do you work for the challenge, or just to gain a sense of achievement?
- Do you want to work for yourself?
- Do you want to help others?
Does your current job fulfil these needs and desires? If not, what job would?

3. Make Your Dreams Come True
If you have a huge dream about your career, maybe you want a big promotion, launch your start-up, or want to work for yourself–find ways to make your dream come true.
You might have to work harder than anyone else to make it happen. You might have a fair share of hardships and failures but it might ultimately give you the chance to do what you always wanted to do and eventually you’ll work happily in the long run.
Make a list of tiny steps to move closer to your dream. These steps can be as small as “following an influencer related to your dream job and learning everything from him” or “preparing for an exam to enhance your skills for that long-awaited promotion.” Do one thing each day that will move you closer to your dream.
You’ll be amazed how small but consistent actions can quickly turn your dreams into reality.

4. Know Your Work’s Purpose
Every job has a purpose. Realizing this can help you to feel good about what you do. Once you do so, you will start noticing the relationship between the work you do and the lives you touch.
For example, if you are a teacher, stop focusing on all the immense changes and adversities in your profession and remember that every day you enter that classroom, you have the privilege to shape a young mind, those children and families count on you.
If you are a builder, recognize that your services help people build the dream homes they have always wanted and fulfil their dreams.
By focussing on the value of your work and the contribution you make, you will feel incredible improvements and satisfaction.

5. Have The Right Attitude
Having a good attitude at work is immensely powerful and it’s a prototype of being happy and successful in your job.
Not everyone is born with a great or positive attitude. Many people are gloomy or negative all the time. Even their presence would make you feel blue because they have a negative aura around them.
A good attitude is something that everyone can work on and improve with practice and mindfulness. Some of the things to try are:
- Practice the art of giving compliments. Make people feel good about themselves.
- Listen to what people say and be interested in them.
- Be respectful, and be thankful for any advice or help you’re given.
- Be helpful.
- Learn to compromise
- Try to be cheerful.

No matter what you do, your job exists for a reason. When you know that reason and when you fully understand how your efforts make the world a better place for someone else – you have found your job’s purpose.
